Bob started his radio journey working at WAUP (now WZIP) at The University of Akron. His professional background includes three years as a News Editor at WHLO Radio in Akron and eight years as News Director at WKNT-AM/FM (now WNIR) in Kent/Akron.
The Alternation is run by Streetsboro High School students who can join by taking the Introduction to Broadcasting class. This class is designed to provide an overview of broadcasting in America as well as on-air experience. The class begins with an overview of WSTB history beginning with the issuance of the station’s FCC license in 1972. After that students learn about radio sales and marketing, audience ratings, how to analyze a broadcast market for acceptable formats and activities, ethics in broadcasting and news, FCC broadcast rules, and the development of rock music in America. The knowledge gained in the class not only provides students with the necessary tools to be on staff, but also provides life skills that can be used in a variety of occupations including business, marketing, and sales.

It all started in 2002 at a broadcasting convention in Las Vegas. Our team cashed in some arcade tickets for a talking cow toy—just for fun. Fast forward a few years, and that silly little cow became the unexpected inspiration for our official mascot: Madcow. Curious how it all happened? Watch the full video to hear Bob Long tell the whole story!
